Elephant Class have been enjoying learning about animals this term, including categorising by what they eat; herbivore, carnivore and omnivore. We investigated a selection of animal poos (playdough) to find out whether the animal it came from was an omnivore, herbivore or carnivore. We looked for bones, signs of animals, […]
Year 1
The Friends of Holy Trinity Church have organised an exhibition of art work from the children of Halstead schools. The title of the exhibition is “70 Years on the Throne” to celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee. At Holy Trinity, the children looked at the Queen from the beginning of her […]
Elephant Class have been enjoying learning about measurement this week and how to use a ruler and metre stick to measure in centimetres. We have been taking lots of opportunities to practise. Here they are measuring items on our playground.
On Tuesday all the children in KS1 and EYFS took part in a performing arts workshop run by Diane, the owner of the local theatre school Rascals. Thank you to the PTFA for funding this activity. Here are some photos, and a short video (when playing, click on the cog […]
Today the children in Gecko and Toucan Classes took part in a Create Carnival where they were involved in a whole range of creative activities out on the field! A fantastic time was had by all… Many thanks to the PTFA for funding the ice creams, and the materials for […]
Here are over 200 photos taken during Sports Day this morning. The weather stayed good for us and the children were amazing! We are incredibly proud of them all.
Following on from their first week using the cameras Year 1 had to try and capture ‘movement’. It’s not an easy thing to do because of the inevitable delay between pressing the button and the photograph being taken. They managed it though, and there are some lovely images here. Well […]
Year 1 were given cameras to use in pairs, and taken out onto the field where they were able to take photographs of anything they liked! In all over 700 photos were taken of a huge range of subjects, along with 15 minutes of accidental video! Although all of the […]
Gecko Class have been looking at the work of Edward Tingatinga, a Tanzanian artist who painted in the late 1960s and who gave his name to a whole style of painting. They have also been studying mammalsin science. These pieces of computer art are a combination of the two topics. […]
The traditional computer paintings of Geckos by Year 1 are finally here, and wonderful they are too. It’s not easy manipulating a trackpad to create images, but I think they’ve all done a great job!
This week we have enjoyed exploring Aboriginal dot paintings of different Australian creatures. We then created our own gecko dot pictures using felt pens concentrating on carefully controlling the marks we made.
This term, Gecko Class will be exploring ‘All Creatures Great and Small’ through our ‘Create’ theme. This week we have read, learnt and added actions to the poem ‘Jump or Jiggle’ by Evelyn Beyer. We hope you enjoy watching our performance!
Today to mark Remembrance Day each class marked the occasion individually at 11am. In addition, for this afternoon’s whole school assembly, Miss Todd took Raven Class to the memorial in the Public Gardens and lead our daily virtual assembly from there. A wreath was laid, a minute’s silence held, and […]
Miss Todd: On Friday in assembly I had the pleasure of announcing the jaw dropping total of the fundraising from the Sponsored Walk. I am thrilled, humbled and stunned to share with you that we have raised £4825.65 with a number of families telling me they still have money to bring in. […]
For their writing focus Toucan Class are reading ‘The Marvellous Fluffy Squishy Itty Bitty” by Beatrice Alemagna. To complement this we went on a town walk looking at all the different types shops we could find. The children were very well behaved, and we also had time to learn a […]
Gecko Class have had a fantastic start to the year! We are enjoying our learning and are excited about Year 1.
Last week Year 1 did grapheme washing, and then created them using natural objects! Later they explored art techniques to create animal rainbow pictures.
Gecko Class have been exploring Australian Aboriginal art and the different techniques used to create effects. We are using block colour in our pictures.
Another fun day in Gecko Class. We wrote a thank you letter from the Snail to the Whale, and then challenged ourselves with problem solving and made bubble wands. (Making sure we didn’t catch anyone else’s bubbles, obviously!)
We had a great day in Gecko Class yesterday. We enjoyed our virtual assembly with Miss Todd. We looked at thank you letters in Literacy, used scales to measure capacity in maths and made beautiful snails using wool.
Gecko Class have spent most of the day constructing the UK landmarks they have been studying out of recycled materials! Can you spot: Edinburgh Castle, The Menai Bridge, Stonehenge, Windsor Castle, The Angel Of The North, and The Giant’s Causeway? The whole class worked brilliantly, helping each other out in […]
On Friday, we completed our STEM Week with an exciting visit from Subject Revolution. KS1 and EYFS travelled around an amazing new world working together in practical maths challenges to help Prince Lunimo tidy up for the Queen. The children worked to pass through each maths challenge zone, undetected by the invading […]
As part of STEM Week Gecko Class studied birds’ nests. After looking at some pictures of real nests, they trawled the school grounds for sticks, twigs, moss, feathers, and other suitable material to use to make their own nests. Using only the collected materials they had to work together to […]
Today the children were put into mixed-age groups named after scientists, and worked together on a range of STEM-related activities. During the course of the day the children learned about how to care for the chicks, created a house of cards, made pictures out of perfect squares, built towers from […]
It started with Booky Breakfast – thank you to everyone who was able to join us! And then Toucan Class visited Halsead Library and WHSmith. They learnt all about what the library does and how we can use it. At WHSmith they spent their World Book Day tokens. They all […]
Year 1 are learning about the United Kingdom and symbols, so of course we have been finding out about the Union Flag. Yesterday, using 2Paint in Purple Mash, the children painted copies of the UK’s flag. It’s not an easy flag to replicate, and it’s made even trickier when you’re […]
To start 2020 Year 1 had a play with the MashCams in Purple Mash. Not everyone was at school on Thursday but most of the class (and a couple of adults) are here in their virtual dressing up clothes. Although this is a fun activity, it’s suprisingly tricky, and I […]
Even though all the children in Gecko Class worked with me on laptops and with BeeBots when they were in Giraffes, it’s still a steep learning curve at the beginning of Year 1. Logging in and accessing websites such as Purple Mash & Sumdog by themselves is a big ask, […]
Gecko Class have been exploring how houses have changed throughout the centuries. The children made models highlighting the features of homes in the past and we put these models onto a timeline showing homes throughout History. Can you spot the Celtic roundhouse, the Tudor beams, Victorian bays and modern day […]
