Before we move onto the Romans after half term, Hammerhead Class have learned about the Iron Age and the Celts. Whilst finding out about the ways metal was used during this period we looked more closely at torcs – neck or wrist bands made most often of twisted metal. They […]

Hammerhead Class learned about what we can learn from cave paintings and then had a go at recreating some. After waiting for the paint washes to dry they used charcoal to create their effective images. By studying Stone Age cave paintings we are able to find out about the lives […]
The drawings on the left are the children’s first attempt at self portraits this term. The drawings on the right are the children’s self portraits having spent time studying shading, light and dark, different media, and increasing abstraction. I am so proud of them for the progress they have made. […]
For their final self portraits of our “What is Beauty?” topic the children were given a larger canvas and allowed to use a mixture of any of the media and techniques they had experimented with over the past term. The results are the product of their creativity, imagination, and hard […]
“He always held his brush very upright and very steady in his hand, fingers down one side, thumb on the other.” – Kensuke’s Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo Our class book at the moment is Kensuke’s Kingdom. In it, Kensuke teaches Michael to paint in a Japanese style. Inspired by the […]
Inspired by works created using a palette knife , the children used three colours to create self portraits in an increasingly abstract way. Paint was applied using glue spreaders rather than brushes, with the paint mixed on the paper. This allowed a greater variation in the thickness of the paint, […]
In the next part of their study of self portraits, Hornet Class looked at the work of Vincent van Gogh, and in particular his use of colour. van Gogh painted over 40 self portraits in a five year period of the late 1880s, right up until his untimely death. We […]
Again focusing on areas on light and dark, Hornet Class went abstract and created self portraits using three-colour collage. We started off by talking about the pictures in the playground that were created back in 2014 with artist Sophie Fox, and then looked at some artwork by Henri Matisse. There […]
This week Hornet Class had their photos in profile and then used charcoal and chalk to draw themselves from this view. The focus was, again, on trying to draw what they could see rather what they thought they could see, with particular notice paid to areas of dark (charcoal) and […]
We have started using pencils, charcoal and chalk to observe and draw. The focus has been methods of shading to provide depth to the children’s drawings, and to draw what we see rather than what we think we see. After drawing self portraits in pencil and chalk (these will be […]
Before we move onto the Romans, Hornet Class have learned about the Iron Age and the Celts. Whilst finding out about the ways metal was used during this period we looked more closely at torcs – neck or wrist bands made most often of twisted metal. They found out that […]
What do cave paintings teach us about the past? Hornet Class learned that they help us know which animals lived in particular areas at particular times, and about the lifestyles of early humans. Without a written history, it is a vital clue to our past. They also heard about a […]
During our ‘Create’ term Year 5 studied sculpture. Their sculptures were all inspired by Niki de Saint Phalle (1930-2002) and throughout the creative process her works of art were on display in the classroom. Each piece was considered with her techniques, and use of form and colour, in mind. Each […]
Today the children in Gecko and Toucan Classes took part in a Create Carnival where they were involved in a whole range of creative activities out on the field! A fantastic time was had by all… Many thanks to the PTFA for funding the ice creams, and the materials for […]
Y5 are busy putting layers of papier-mâché over their plasticine model animals. It’s the final piece of their “Whimsy” topic inspired by the works of Nikki de Saint Phalle.
Gecko Class have been looking at the work of Edward Tingatinga, a Tanzanian artist who painted in the late 1960s and who gave his name to a whole style of painting. They have also been studying mammalsin science. These pieces of computer art are a combination of the two topics. […]
The traditional computer paintings of Geckos by Year 1 are finally here, and wonderful they are too. It’s not easy manipulating a trackpad to create images, but I think they’ve all done a great job!
This week we have enjoyed exploring Aboriginal dot paintings of different Australian creatures. We then created our own gecko dot pictures using felt pens concentrating on carefully controlling the marks we made.
The next part of Panther Class’ work inspired by Niki de Saint Phalle is mosaic work on bowls they had enhanced with papier-mâché. The materials they are using for the mosaics are the off-cuts from Toucan Class’ ‘Rainbow Crow’ feather paintings.
Year 5 are creating sculptures this term, inspired by the works of French-American artist Niki de Saint Phalle. The first stage of this process was to look at de Saint Phalle’s decorating style and develop it to decorate existing models. The children planned their designs and then painted them onto […]
Y4 have kicked off their art lessons by learning about different artists. We looked at Matisse, David Hockney, Rousseau and Dali. We are going to use Dali and surrealism as a focus since our theme is ‘Dreams’. We have also been learning about fractions in our maths lessons, using the […]
In the week before half term the children in Panther Class were given these 15 pieces of art and asked to interpret them in any way they wished. The results, underneath, are fantastic! Well done to all the children who took part – each time one was submitted the lockdown […]
In the penultimate graphics lesson for Toucan Class this term they had to import and manipulate a moveable figure in 2Paint-a-Picture, and then use their trackpad skills to colour and enhance them. It’s not an easy thing to do but the results are great. You can see the moveable figures […]
As is tradition, Toucan Clas spent their first full Computing Lesson of the year painting Toucans! They’re displayed below, and for a while on the outside screen. Watch out for more computer art from the class over the coming weeks.
Last week Year 1 did grapheme washing, and then created them using natural objects! Later they explored art techniques to create animal rainbow pictures.
Gecko Class have been exploring Australian Aboriginal art and the different techniques used to create effects. We are using block colour in our pictures.
And then came the oceans… Following on from the making of the globes (which you can see pictures of here) Toucan Class have today painted on the water. More to follow…
Toucan Class spent a day designing, making and evaluating moving pictures. They had to follow a design criteria carefully to design a moving picture and then make their design. Their final products were brilliant!
Y4 have been using Google Drawings to create Warholesque images of themselves… They had to create at least three different versions of their faces using the formatting options available to them, and then move and crop the images to make them into a neat block. I’m really pleased with how […]
Year 1 are learning about the United Kingdom and symbols, so of course we have been finding out about the Union Flag. Yesterday, using 2Paint in Purple Mash, the children painted copies of the UK’s flag. It’s not an easy flag to replicate, and it’s made even trickier when you’re […]
