After spearing fish and hunting reindeer last week Hammerhead Class turned gatherers this afternoon. The children discovered the kinds of foods Stone Age people would have eaten, and realised that in years such as this with unusual weather they could have struggled for food. The apple trees on the school […]
We have been learning about the Stone Age, and this week we found out about their houses. We discovered that some Stone Age houses were made with stone walls covered with wood and animal skin roofs. Because the houses were built so long ago only the walls remain, and so […]
Hammerhead Class learned about what we can learn from cave paintings and then had a go at recreating some. After waiting for the paint washes to dry they used charcoal to create their effective images. By studying Stone Age cave paintings we are able to find out about the lives […]
What a day! The first school visit in too long was a great success. We learned loads about Roman Britain, and had a lots of fun in the process. The children were amazing: enthusiastic, well behaved, and a credit to the Holy Trinity School community. Our (excellent) guide was glowing […]

This afternoon Hornet Class turned into gatherers, picking blackberries, plums, apples, and even a couple of rosehips and raspberries, from the school grounds and stewing them with honey. The children learned about how to pick fruit safely, and got to taste the kind of food it is believed Stone Age […]
What do cave paintings teach us about the past? Hornet Class learned that they help us know which animals lived in particular areas at particular times, and about the lifestyles of early humans. Without a written history, it is a vital clue to our past. They also heard about a […]
Y5 are going to be learning about the Shang Dynasty this term, but first we’ve had a brief introduction to China to better understand its place in the world. As part of this we’ve made kites, learned about the complex form of Chinese script and painted out own names, and […]
In Year 3 we are designing and making a marble maze. Our ideas are based on the inside of one of the pyramids of Egypt.
Stonehenge is a real historical mystery. There are many theories about why and how it was built, but nobody really knows the answer. This afternoon Octopus Class enjoyed recreating Stonehenge from biscuits!
Yesterday Toucan class were visited by Andrea from Essex Fire and Rescue Service. Andrea taught us all about how the fire brigade had changed over time and about The Great Fire Of London. She was very impressed by how much the children knew about the topic already and they enthusiastically […]
On Sunday Miss Todd and children from Year 6 represented the school at the Halstead Remembrance Service in the Public Gardens.
What an amazing day! We had a lot of fun trying to hold up the extremely heavy chain mail tunic, ground some flour, tried on clothing and helmets, played Hnefatafl and Nine Men’s Morris, learnt some Viking commands for battle and so much more!
Year 6 had a taster session of Ancient Greek Olympic food. After limbering up they got to taste food such as olives, feta cheese, and dried fruits. It’s fair to say that not all the children would have enjoyed their pre-competition sustinence in the time of the Ancient Greeks but […]

The children made models highlighting the features of homes in the past and we put these models onto a timeline showing homes throughout History. Can you spot the Celtic roundhouse, the Tudor beams, Victorian bays and modern day […]
The Stone Age activities continued into the afternoon. Here are some of the photos of our time travellers learning all about life thousands of years ago.
We’ve stepped back in time and become hunter gatherers for the day… Will they survive? Watch this space! Half of the class are inside building a shelter in the style of ‘Stig of the Dump’. Meanwhile outside…all of the tribes are busy learning to track animals, grind oats, light fires, […]
This morning there was a ‘fire’ on the willow dome. Luckily, Toucan Class were available to put out the fire using what they had learnt about putting out fires in the 17th century. They passed buckets along a chain of people, working together in order to tackle the fire. Whilst […]
Year 3 have spent the afternoon exploring ‘Holy Trinity Caves’. They have recreated artwork formed by Neolithic people during the early Stone Age.
Year 3 became archeologists this afternoon, investigating the diet of early Stone Age people. They delved into ‘poo’ and found fruits, nuts and seeds. Just look at their faeces!
Year 4 were asked which chocolate will melt the fastest. They investigated dark, milk and white chocolate by first creating a prediction then analysing their results to compare. They found that most people said the white chocolate was the quickest to melt and that the dark chocolate melted the slowest. […]
At the beginning of their Ancient Greeks topic Year 5 created individual web pages to store their work, before learning about and painting plates in the style of the time. They tried using a different grip on their paintbrushes to help with precision. It wasn’t easy, but they took their […]

On Monday Toucan Class spent the day boat making. They started with testing materials to find which ones would be best to make their boat out of, and then spent time making their boats. At the end of the day they tested them out. They worked really well and found […]
