As part of the study of soils and rocks, Hammerhead Class made and looked after wormeries. After several weeks observing how the worms helped mix up and compost the soil the worms were released today back into the wild. They were carefully placed into the school’s big compost heap so […]

This afternoon Hammerhead Class created wormeries as part of their work on rocks and soil. They were finding out what soil is made of and how it is formed. We have ten mini-wormeries in all and we will be caring for the worms very carefully for the next few weeks. […]
Elephant Class have been enjoying learning about animals this term, including categorising by what they eat; herbivore, carnivore and omnivore. We investigated a selection of animal poos (playdough) to find out whether the animal it came from was an omnivore, herbivore or carnivore. We looked for bones, signs of animals, […]
Somewhat belatedly, here is a short video showing the volcanoes that Squirrel Class designed and made erupting! There was a lot of fun, and a lot of learning, in this activity. ?
Hornet Class popped in to see the chicks in Penguin Class before they went off to their lovely new home. Some of the children chose to hold a chick and have their photo taken.
We had a fantastic day at Colchester Zoo. We learned lots of interesting facts about how different animals have adapted to their habitats! It was great to be able to explore the zoo and see so many different animals in a variety of habitats. We were able to get close […]
This week in science Hornet Class experimented with magnets by making a number of games. The games were a fun way to explore the capabilities and characteristics of magnets.
Last week Meerkats investigated microhabitats and worked scientifically. We found a range of microhabitats in school including long grass, under logs, piles of leaves and holes in trees. Working with a partner we used our scientific skills of observation to help with data collection. We found and named many types […]
This afternoon Hornet Class turned into gatherers, picking blackberries, plums, apples, and even a couple of rosehips and raspberries, from the school grounds and stewing them with honey. The children learned about how to pick fruit safely, and got to taste the kind of food it is believed Stone Age […]
Gecko Class have been looking at the work of Edward Tingatinga, a Tanzanian artist who painted in the late 1960s and who gave his name to a whole style of painting. They have also been studying mammalsin science. These pieces of computer art are a combination of the two topics. […]
Toucan Class have made moving pictures linked to their Science and English work on animals and their habitats. They followed the design process of researching, designing, making and evaluating.
During STEM Week we completed an experiment to find out how to make the egg float. We added salt to water to make a solution, this made out eggs float! We are thinking about trying this with flour and sugar to see what happens.
And then came the oceans… Following on from the making of the globes (which you can see pictures of here) Toucan Class have today painted on the water. More to follow…
As part of STEM Week Gecko Class studied birds’ nests. After looking at some pictures of real nests, they trawled the school grounds for sticks, twigs, moss, feathers, and other suitable material to use to make their own nests. Using only the collected materials they had to work together to […]
Today the children were put into mixed-age groups named after scientists, and worked together on a range of STEM-related activities. During the course of the day the children learned about how to care for the chicks, created a house of cards, made pictures out of perfect squares, built towers from […]
Our STEM Week coincides with British Science Week – this year it is all about our diverse planet. In assembly the children considered all the types of diversity in our world. We talked about our diverse weather and attempted to create a cloud in a bottle!
Panther Class went on a walk up the High Street this morning to make observations on food retail outlets as part of STEM Week!
Year 2 finished off this half term’s science topic by thinking about why exercise is important. As part of this they completed 10 minutes of intensive exercise by doing some basic circuit training. They described themselves as: tired, sweaty, exhausted, dizzy, refreshed, good, hot, achy and happy when thinking about […]
Today, Year 4 investigated complete and incomplete circuits by first predicting which circuit would work. They discovered what a circuit needs to be complete in order to allow the current of electricity to flow.
In science this week Year 5 had to try and keep their ice pops* frozen for half an hour so they could eat them. Each group were given three ice pops to preserve, whilst three control pops sat and melted. Mostly the groups managed to keep things cool, but as […]
Year 3 became archeologists this afternoon, investigating the diet of early Stone Age people. They delved into ‘poo’ and found fruits, nuts and seeds. Just look at their faeces!
As part of our topic on the the circulatory system Kestrel Class made blood to help us remember the components that make up our blood, and the functions of each of them. We calculated the percentage blood parts we would need to represent: 55% Plasma , 44% red blood cells […]
Kestrel Class investigated how refraction changes the direction in which light travels. We completed two different experiments which showed distorted images due to light being refracted.
Gecko Class had a fantastic outdoor adventure day. They have been stick whittling, plant identifying and labelling, litter picking and flower using recycled plastic!
Year 4 were asked which chocolate will melt the fastest. They investigated dark, milk and white chocolate by first creating a prediction then analysing their results to compare. They found that most people said the white chocolate was the quickest to melt and that the dark chocolate melted the slowest. […]
To end our theme this term ‘My Home is My Castle’, Gecko Class have been investigating the best mixture of sand and water to build a sandcastle. We gradually added more water to our sand and made careful observations of the castles we built.
To help learn and recall information about the human digestive system, Year 4 played a game called Quiz, Quiz, Trade where they retell information and swap (trade) their cards with each other. The children were able to recall specific functions of the digestive system – see what they can remember […]
