Bad Weather Policy

Dear Parents/Carers

It’s that time of year again, so I thought that I would write to all families just to remind you of our emergency procedures in the event of bad weather.

In the event of a severe snowfall the school could be forced to temporarily close due to the fact that most of our teaching staff live outside the local area. However, the severity of the weather is not always the factor that determines whether we close or not – it is often the impact the weather has upon our travel systems and safety in and around the school grounds. In 2010 we were forced to close largely due to the treacherous roads and condition of the footpaths around the school. We have large stores of salt and grit, which will be used to anticipate snowfall, but if we have a moderate to heavy fall of snow gritting is largely ineffective (as you can often see by the condition of our roads).

Any closure, or notification that we are open despite the snow, will be reported via the App, this website (and simultaneously on Facebook & Twitter) as soon as a decision is made. I will always try to make a decision as early as possible, and ideally the evening before, to enable you to plan and make childcare arrangements, but due to the unpredictable nature of our weather I cannot guarantee exactly when that will be.

Rest assured, as soon as a decision has been made we will let you know immediately.

To see any announcements you can:

Download our App from the Google Play or Apple App stores and ensure the ‘Whole School’ notification channel is switched on. (Find help with this on our Home-School Communication page.)

We will always update the app first, then move onto social media, etc.

We will also inform BBC Radio Essex and of any developments, although historically there has been a delay of up to an hour before they have updated their information.

I apologise in advance if the weather results in disruption but although I will only close our school as a last resort, my priority at all times must remain the safety of our children, parents and staff.
